Most conversations about mobile apps focus on the build. Features, design, platforms, timeline, cost. What gets less attention — and what often surprises businesses after launch — is what happens next.
A mobile app isn’t a website you can leave largely unchanged for years. It operates in a fast-moving environment where the platform, the devices, and the operating systems beneath it are all changing continuously. Maintenance isn’t optional — it’s the work that keeps the thing you built actually working.
Why Apps Need Ongoing Maintenance
Operating system updates. Apple releases a major iOS version every autumn; Google releases major Android versions on a similar cycle. These updates change APIs, deprecate functions, and alter how apps behave. An app that isn’t updated to stay compatible will start behaving incorrectly — and eventually stop working on new OS versions entirely.
App store requirements. Both the App Store and Google Play impose requirements on apps they distribute, and these requirements evolve. Apple in particular has a history of requiring apps to be rebuilt against the latest SDK after each iOS release. Apps that don’t comply are removed from the store or blocked from receiving updates.
Device fragmentation. New device models with new screen sizes, new hardware capabilities, and new performance characteristics are released regularly. An app tested on last year’s flagship may have layout issues on this year’s devices.
Third-party dependencies. If your app integrates with other services — payment processors, analytics, maps, authentication providers — those services update their own APIs. Dependencies that aren’t maintained can break integrations unexpectedly.
Security vulnerabilities. Libraries and frameworks used in app development have security vulnerabilities discovered and patched regularly. An app running old dependencies is an app with known vulnerabilities.
What Good Post-Launch Maintenance Looks Like
Annual OS compatibility updates — at minimum, testing against each new major iOS and Android release before it ships and making the changes needed to maintain compatibility. Ideally, you’re also adopting new platform capabilities that improve your app’s experience.
Dependency updates — regularly updating third-party libraries to their maintained versions. Automated tooling (like Dependabot) can flag available updates; a developer needs to evaluate, test, and apply them.
Performance monitoring — crash reporting and analytics to understand how the app is performing in production. Crashes you don’t know about are problems your users are experiencing without you being aware.
Bug fixes — addressing issues that surface from user feedback and monitoring. The longer a bug remains unfixed, the more users are affected and the worse the app store ratings become.
Store listing maintenance — app store screenshots, descriptions, and metadata should be updated when they become outdated. An app store listing with three-year-old screenshots doesn’t inspire confidence.
Planning for Maintenance From the Start
Maintenance is significantly easier — and cheaper — when it’s been accounted for in the initial build.
Apps built with clean architecture, up-to-date dependencies, and good test coverage are faster and less risky to update than those that weren’t. An app built quickly against the minimum viable standard may work on launch day but accumulates technical debt that makes every subsequent change more expensive.
When evaluating the total cost of a mobile app, build a realistic maintenance estimate into year two, three, and beyond. A rough guide: expect to spend 15–20% of the initial build cost annually on maintenance for a typical business app.
What Happens If You Don’t Maintain an App
App stores remove apps that don’t meet current requirements. Users on new OS versions start experiencing crashes and layout problems. Security vulnerabilities accumulate in aging dependencies. The app slowly becomes something you can’t confidently recommend to new users.
The irony is that deferred maintenance is more expensive than regular maintenance. Skipping a year of updates doesn’t mean a year of savings — it means a larger, riskier catch-up project when the neglect eventually becomes impossible to ignore.
